You may already know that many parts of New Hampshire and Maine were hit with strong winds and driving rain on Thursday during the day and even more so on Thursday evening.

Strong winds damages many parts of town, bringing down power lines, trees, and damaging homes.  The news stations are reporting that over 300,000 people have lost power.  I live in Somersworth New Hampshire and lost power around 10:00 pm on Thursday.  I was lucky enough to have power restored last night, Friday around 7:00.  Others in the area have not been so lucky!

The photos above were taken on Shore Road in Ogunquit Maine around 1 pm.  I was on the road to visit a friend at The Cliff House Resort and Spa when I captured these huge waves.  They might be a little tough to see, but the waves in my estimate were at least 15 ft. tall at some point.  Pretty Cool!

I'll be out snapping photos around Somersworth and Dover later today.  I'll post them later.

The last week in February is typically a school vacation week here in New Hampshire.  I remember as a kid growing up that I enjoyed this school vacation more than any other. 

Living on the Seacoast of New Hampshire, we are lucky enough to be a short driving distance to the beaches for the summer, and the mountains in the winter.  Every February vacation, my parents would take me to my choice of ski area and go skiing for a couple days.

Skiing for me was, and still is one thing I thoroughly enjoy.  It always amazed me as a kid though.  I was the only one in my family that skied, yet every vacation, until I was old enough to drive my self, my parents would sacrifice a couple days of work and bring my to my favorite destination.  While I enjoyed the skiing and meeting of some friends, my parents would sit in the lodge and spend the day watching me!

This year I am sort of carrying on that tradition.  I am taking my 8 year old son Michael to the mountains for his first trip.  Although we will not be skiing, we will enjoy the day snowboarding.  My son is what you would call a "sports fanatic".  He has spent the past 5 years playing travel hockey, baseball, and soccer.  This year he has asked me to take him snow boarding with some friends, and or course I had to say yes.  the thoughts and memories of my parents taking me brought such joy to me, I was more than happy to share them with him.

So Friday, we will be heading to King Pine, located in East Madison New Hampshire.  Wish me luck and hope that I don't hurt myself too bad!!!!

Somersworth New Hampshire homes for sale!!!!

The Rochester New Hampshire Department of Public Works is participating in a statewide sale of backyard compost bins in celebration of Earth Day 2010.

The Rochester New Hampshire DPW is offering compost bins, kitchen scrap pails and Systern rain barrels at discount prices through March 26. According to the DPW, about 25 percent of the average household's waste consists of yard trimmings and kitchen scraps that can be easily composted.

Residents can save $65 for every ton of waste they compost because it does not have to be shipped out of town for disposal. The sale offers at a discount tools that can turn those scraps into a rich soil amendment. The DPW offers a home compost bin and how-to guide with a combined retail value of $100 for $42. The black bins are made of 100 percent recycled plastic and come with a 10-year warranty. The 33-inch-high, 35-inch-wide bins are large enough for a family of five.

Kitchen scrap pails are available for $8. The white and beige two-gallon pails come with a hinged lid that snaps into place.

The tan-colored Systern rain barrels have a 55-gallon capacity and are made from high-density polyethylene with up to 50 percent recycled plastic. The barrels can cost up to $120, but the DPW is offering them for $60. The barrels are an excellent water source for lawns, indoor and outdoor plants and can save up to 40 percent on household sewage treatment and water bills.
