Historic tour of New Durham New Hampshire's homes, barns and buildings

New Durham New Hampshire

The 1772 Meetinghouse Restoration Committee has announced an historic tour of homes, barns, and buildings to be held Sunday, June 27 from 1 – 4 p.m. The self-guided tour begins at the 1772 Meetinghouse on Old Bay Road, one of only five pre-Revolutionary War meetinghouses in the state, where woodworking and timber framing demonstrations will be held. Youngsters can join in old time games from 1 – 2 p.m.

Besides the tour of the Meetinghouse, which features hand cut lathe and horsehair plaster, the Meetinghouse grounds also provide access to the old Town Pound and an easy walking trail that passes old graveyards and a vernal pool.

Two local barns, both granted Historic Barn Preservation Easements due to their authentic reconstruction, original framing, and educational benefits, are highlights of the tour. A timber-framing expert will be on hand at the Randall Barn, as well as an assortment of oxen yokes.

Several homes of local historic import are included in the tour and feature collections of varying natures, unique architecture, and historic graveyards.

The Ridge church of the Free Will Baptist Church, built in the early 1800s and complete with a vintage organ and chandelier, will also be open to visitors. An anniversary service, recognizing the signing of the covenant that created the denomination in a nearby home, will be held that morning.

Once the destination of thousands of members nationwide, the church is a prominent piece of New Durham history.

A working farm rounds out the rain or shine event, providing fun experiences for all ages. Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students over 10. Tickets can be purchased only at the Meetinghouse that day, and signage and maps clearly direct the route.

Proceeds will benefit restoration efforts of the 1772 Meetinghouse Restoration Committee.
