The heat continues in New Hampshire; Keeping your house safe

Today was just the beginning of what meteorologists are saying could be record breaking heat in New Hampshire.

Here are some ways to keep your home cool: Sometimes it's things you don't even think about that make a world of difference in beating the heat

  • keeping the window shades down.
  • White window shades or mini blinds - because they can reduce solar heat by 40-50 percent.
  • put a bowl of ice in front of the fan to blow cool air.
  • Use box fans in a window with the air intake pulling air to the outside.
  • If you live in a two-story home, staying downstairs can also keep you cooler. Heat rises to the upper floors of a home so staying downstairs makes a big difference.
  • Something as simple as using ceiling lights or table lamps and add to the heat inside a home. Keep unnecessary lights off and help keep the temperature in a home lower.
  • Avoid using ovens and stoves during the day which can also up the heat factor during a heat wave.

Keeping a home cool during these extreme weather conditions is not only important for an individuals comfort but for the house's health as well.
