Doing things just a little bit different

Having been a licensed real estate agent, a Realtor® for the past 8 years, I have noticed, and read many articles and books about what makes a good agent.  A common theme has been what the agent has been doing the same, and what the agent has been doing differently.

Doing the same thing over and over may work for some industries, and for some people.  However, it is my belief that in the sale of real estate and real property, doing the same thing over and over may not be the best option.

I'm not saying that I personally have tried to "re-invent the wheel" or anything.  But what I have done is tried to "re-tweak" my everyday activities and tried to make what I do just a little bit better than everyone else.

Up until 2011, I thought my day to day activities were working to my advantage.  I was on-line everyday, reading and writing blog posts, reading trade magazines and books, I bought almost every marketing give-away I could, Boston Red Sox schedules, note pads, door hangers, etc.....   For some time, all of the that worked, I was able to track some solid leads to most of the items.  Others not so much.

With the limited training I was offered in my offices, I was being told that what I was doing was right. Buy everything you can and give it away with your business card and the calls and emails will come.  Little did I know, that was correct, but only to a certain degree.  Give-aways are o.k., but what do you do with the folks that you have given away the items to after-wards, where is the follow up?  Did you get names, numbers, or email addresses?

My goal in 2011, because I finally decided to set one and stick with it, was better follow up.  What does better follow up mean for me?  It means not only giving some things away, but asking the right questions to those folks, and obtaining the right information to follow up with them.  A simple phone call, email, or letter to some people can make the world of difference.  I know for me personally it has.

This is one of the small things I am doing differently this year that I feel has made an impact on my business.

What are you doing differently to make a difference for you?

Bill good question, i guess there is no one thing I'm doing different yet looking at all of my business systems and looking how to optimize streamline or use more effectively, staying in touch with clients and potential buyers and sellers is critical to my plan.

Bill: Last year I heard some of my friends on FB talking about a new book that came out called 7L Seven Levels of Communication, go from relationships to referrals by Michael J Maher.

I read the book and was hooked.  Michael teaches a class at the end of the year called BOOST!  Guess what that means...it will make you soar the next year.  After BOOST!, which is a once a week webinar for four weeks (VERY modestly priced) came BOOST+Plus.  You had to attend BOOST! first then you could move on.

I am a raving fan.  Go to FB and type in seven levels of communication and you will find thousands of REALTORS(r) who have said great things.

THIS, is what I am doing to take my real estate practice to about 3 levels up.

Hi Evelyn,

7l is the book I am currently reading and that was the inspiration for this blog post.  I am hooked!  Such a good read so far, and I'm only half way through it!
